At BMO IFFSA Toronto 2016, “Manto” impresses Urdu Film lovers, while Bilal Saeed wows fans at concerts

[May 25, 2016 – APNAHUB] – Urdu film lovers in Toronto gathered in large numbers to attend the sold out red carpet premiere of the critically acclaimed film Manto. The film had its North American Premiere at the annual BMO IFFSA (International Film Festival of South Asia) Toronto 2016. The festival celebrated its 5th year this May and is North America’s biggest South Asian Film Festival.

Festival president and founder Sunny Gill, and vice president Inder Chopra highlighted the quality of work coming out of Pakistan and reiterated their resolve to showcase quality cinema from Pakistan at IFFSA Toronto. Dr. Sania Anjum, festival Advisory Board Member, encouraged more film makers from Pakistan to consider IFFSA Toronto to showcase their quality work, and joined IFFSA team in thanking Sarmad Khoosat and Zee Studios for ensuring Manto made it to this festival.

This year, BMO IFFSA Toronto had an exciting line up of 80+ films in 15 different languages and 40+ events. Manto was chosen as the festival closing film. IFFSA Toronto in the past has screened Pakistani films like Ishq Khuda and Chambaili.


The audience for Manto included a mix of South Asians, Urdu speaking and Punjabi, from Indo-Pak background, and had comments on each and every facet of this superb cinematic experience from music to direction and outfits. A group of members from Punjabi writers club were all praises in terms of how Sarmad Khoosat directed this complex story and was able to deliver a stellar performance in the role of Manto as well. Another audience member commented on how the director infused various short stories in the overall theme of this film.

Manto includes an ensemble cast from Pakistan’s Film and TV industry. Sarmad Khoosat is outstanding as a director and in the role of Saadat Hassan Manto the writer and has acted and directed this complex character with finesse. Saania Saeed and Saba Qamar were flawless. It was endearing to see Saba Qamar play Noor – e – Jahan and the audience loved her performance.

Manto definitely left a huge impression on Urdu film lovers here in Toronto and are looking forward to more quality cinema coming out of Pakistan.

Besides Manto, another talent from Pakistan who made his first appearance in Toronto was Bilal Saeed. Famously referred to as King of Romantic pop by fans, Bilal Saeed mesmerized audiences at the IFFSA Toronto Red Carpet Gala and Closing Concert.
